TANGIBLE AND INTANGIBLE HERITAGE FOR A REAL WORLD

An international seminar on Tangible and Intangible Heritage for a Real World
will be held on April 28, 2008 at the University of Art and Design Helsinki.
The seminar will take place at the LUME Center, Sampo Hall, from 10:00 – 17:00 hours.

Among the keynote speakers in the morning session on tangible and intangible heritage are professor Tomislav Sola, who is professor at the University of Zagreb as well as director of the Best of Heritage Festival held annually in Dubrovnik, Croatia; professor of history of cinema at Taideteollinen Korkeakoulu, Peter von Bagh who also director of the Midnight Sun Festival in Finland and professor Larry Friedlander who is an expert on performance and digital media from Stanford University, USA.

In the early afternoon there will be a session on Heritage and National Identity in Art and Design in Finland. This session will feature Derek Fewster, PhD from the University of Helsinki, Prof. Pekka Korvenmaa from University of Art and Design; Susanna Pettersson from the Finnish National Gallery; Jukka Savolainen from the Design Museum Helsinki and Maria Koskijoki from the Helinä Rautavaara Museum in Espoo.

A presentation of works from students working on the topic of heritage in the Master of Arts and Doctor of Arts program at the Media Lab, University of Art and Design Helsinki, will close the session.

A systematic understanding of the diversity in cultural heritage can bring together in many ways and directions our knowledge of the world itself. In this seminar we are called to reflect about the concepts of tangible and intangible, or immaterial, heritage, from the point of view of practicing artists and designers. Can art and design support and enable the transmission of diverse forms of intangible heritage as well as promote the creation of new ones? How do we approach the preservation of intangible heritage in a world simultaneously influenced by globalization and chaos? Can cultural heritage play an integrative role in the development of multicultural societies? What role can cultural heritage play in economic revitalization and development? These are some of the questions that we would like to reflect on.

Kulttuuriperinnön rooli nykyajassa

Lumeen Sampo-salissa järjestetään 28.4. klo 10-17 kansainvälinen kulttuuriperintöseminaari “Tangible and Intangible Heritage for a Real World”. Seminaarin puhujina on kansainvälisesti tunnettuja alan asiantuntijoita. Seminaarin päättää Taideteollisen korkeakoulun Medialaboratorion maisteri- ja jatko-opiskelijoiden alan oppilastöiden ja tutkimuksen esittely.

“Tangible and Intangible Heritage for a Real World” – Todellisen maailman aineellinen ja aineeton perintö

Kulttuuriperinnön monimuotoisuuden ymmärtäminen voi auttaa muodostamaan kokonaiskuvaa maailmasta. Tässä seminaarissa kentällä toimivat taiteilijat ja designerit ottavat kantaa aineellisen ja aineettoman kulttuuriperinnön käsitteisiin ja mahdollisiin rooleihin maailmassa. Voivatko taide ja design toimia välittäjän roolissa aineettoman kulttuuriperinnön eri muotojen välillä, ja voivatko ne jopa luoda uutta perintöä uusine muotoineen? Miten huolehdimme aineettoman perinnön säilyttämisestä maailmassa, jossa vallitsee globalisaatio ja kaaos? Voiko kulttuuriperinnöllä olla kokoava rooli monikulttuuristen yhteisöjen kehityksessä? Miten kulttuuriperintö voi vaikuttaa talouden elpymiseen ja kehitykseen? Esimerkiksi näihin kysymyksiin pyritään löytämään vastauksia maanantain seminaarissa.
