Media Lab Helsinki in the Participatory Design Conference

Co-design, user centered design, participatory design and related terms are commonly used concepts in the teaching and research activities at the Media Lab. The Participatory Design Conference PDC 2008 (http://www.pdc2008.org/) will take place in a week in Indiana State University at Bloomington with the theme “Experiences and Challenges”.

The Media Lab Helsinki will be well represented at the conference. Researcher Andrea Botero (Arki research group) is organizing together with colleagues from TAIK School of Design, IDEO design consultancy (Palo Alto, CA) and Politechnico di Milano (Italy) a workshop on Design for Codesigners (http://mlab.taik.fi/co-design-ws/).

Furthermore in the conference program there are 3 papers from the Media Lab. Teemu Leinonen, Tarmo Toikkanen and Katrina Silfvast (Learning Environments) have a full paper entitled “Software as Hypothesis: Research-Based Design Methodology”. In the exploratory papers section Andrea Botero and Joanna Saad-Sulonen will present the paper “Co-designing for new city-citizen interaction possibilities: weaving prototypes and interventions in the design and development of Urban Mediator”; and Mariana Salgado (Systems of Representation) and Andrea Botero will present “Opening Exhibitions: The Visually Impaired and the Design of Probes Packages”.

The papers are published in the Conference Proceedings and will be available in the ACM Digital Library.
