Rapid prototyping for music, art and design work

Nickname: persona

Short description:

Wondering today about how new ways of communication, allowed by our present time technology, affect human identity transformation and construction in the net and how they can cause physical feeling and human energy perception to be lost or experienced in a new manner, nickname: persona project is an interactive audiovisual installation where people is obligated to act to make the piece possible and wants to make them wonder about the kind of relationship established between them and how they are showing their identity to the others;
The work would consist of taking data from visitors’ bodies by sensors, which would manipulate the sound and taking snapshots of their faces to build a new face with all of them. Sound and image would be streamed to a website.

Development (working plan):

During the following three month:
1. Make some tests with sensors to experience the kind of data that we can receive from the human body and decide the kind of relation that it can be established between them and the sound of the installation.
2. Make some test about the disposition of the sensors and how the visitor must use them.
3. Decide the shape of the presentation of this part of the project and also the whole project output.

Technical solutions:

Sensors (undefined)
Arduino
Max/MSP

Questions:

Are there some sensors that I could test before buying them? I’m interested in blood pressure, body temperature, sweat, heat beating, nervous system… any other ideas?

    Hi,

Thanks for your description. I would recommend you to think a bit more in details an write about this process:
“The work would consist of taking data from visitors’ bodies by sensors, which would manipulate the sound and taking snapshots of their faces to build a new face with all of them. Sound and image would be streamed to a website.”

This will help you to define what you want to do and how to do it 🙂
Michi can answer the technical question…
    Good luck.

    yours,
    Marianne

This work seems to consist of four different of entities. One is sensoring, another one is about image processing, third one is to generate sound and the last one is to stream movie. Each entity require a certain amount of knowledge and skills. I would recommend to reduce them. Realistically I would say sensoring and sound generation to be able to complete your work within 3 month.

To make your idea down to earth, please describe how the audience interact with your work. Tasting each sensor will probably take a few days to be set up, run and calibrate sensor values. From my professional experience, user-centered rather than technology driven approach to your concept is always better. For instance, starting with 5 senses might help you understand your idea more descriptive.

blood pressure – I have the sensor to read the pulse of blood from finger tip at Media Lab Helsinki but none haven’t use it. I suppose that it use serial communication to send data to a computer. If you study and understand Serial communication, I can lend you for a shirt of time.
You need to understand this before experience any Serial Communication.

pressure – I have some pressure sensor at Media Lab Helsinki. This sensor relatively easy to use. You can also take a look at this.

sweat – I don’t have any of sensors which detect sweat. I haven’t found any which is implementable for non-technical students.

heat – I have a couple of sensors in my own collections but it is very difficult to utilize this with Arduino. I usually use this sensor with another microcontroller called BASIC Stamp. BS is my favorite but a bit advanced and quite expensive. I can demonstrate it though.

This Temperature Probe will probably work with Arduino easily but I have only broken one with me.

beat – you can probably capture beats with vibration sensor. Check this demo movie.

nervous system – I suppose that mesuring signals in the nervous system requires an medical operation… so I can’t help you this.
