The Way to Urban Long Tail
WHAT IS THE CONTEXT OF YOUR PRESENTATION?
Diploma project in Industrial and Strategic Design Department
A DESCRIPTION OF YOUR PRESENTATION
Many people work and live in cities where they’re not originally from. More and more people would live in quite a few cities in their life and still think of moving on. Making decisions of where to move is crucial. Career/job opportunity is usually the first consideration, followed by lifestyle amenities, what kind of people live there and how one identifies him/herself with a city. Renaissance maestro flooded into Florence, modernist artists all went to Paris, Vienna once hosted many avant-garde minds, American-dream is still appealing, and Helsinki has welcomed university brains in the latest decade. The world is growing flat. But it’s also growing extremely spiky: Certain people cluster in a few cities.
I think each city has its own charisma. Only the mass media made people believe so that only a few cities are exciting and inspiring. Cities need a healthy feedback system to reflect and develop. My design question is, how can we reveal the existence of “non-bestseller” cities and drive people’s choice to the very extend of the “Urban Long Tail”?

Artists Markus Kåhre and Susanne Gottberg are preparing their exhibition for the Amos Anderson Art Museum and asked help for video projection part of their installation from Media Lab Helsinki. The opening for the exhibition will be in August 2009.

Markus Kåhre:
“We are working on the show together (Susanne and I), not only doing a joint exhibition but making all the works together. The center piece is a huge painted installation with the idea of stepping into a painting. The projection works like the main counterpoint to that. The exhibition investigates the relation between picture
and space, museum and the outside, art and reality. We are also searching after a new kind of dramaturgy in the field of visual art.”

The idea of the projection installation is to track moving people on the street outside the museum window and project their silhouettes on a canvas inside the exhibition space. The continuity of people walking on the canvas and then by the window makes people part of the installation.

New Media MA students Ramyah Gowrishankar and Liisa Tervinen along with Ilpo Kari (Chief coordinator) are working on the project during the winter 2008-2009.

The EU-funded ICING project (Innovative Cities for the Next Generation) has been successfully reviewed on the 25th of September 2008 in Barcelona. Media Lab was involved in this project, through the Arki research group, for the full two and a half years that the project lasted. Our main contribution was the production of the Urban Mediator software as well as the use and development of the co-design approach in an eGovernment project.

Urban Mediator is a web-based open source software that provides a way for citizens and cities to mediate local, location-based discussions, activities, and information. Its iterative development has involved a variety of co-design activities with residents, schoolchildren, the local development company, and city planners, among others. Urban Mediator has also been used in public trials that included various participatory projects set up by the City of Helsinki in 2007 and 2008. The Urban Mediator tool is available as a platform for new R&D collaborations: http://um.uiah.fi

Synopsis
Players must maintain a carbon neutral, happy home for a year. The player uses the mouse to turn appliances on or off, thereby affecting the carbon emission and happiness levels, which in turn influence their monthly bills. They are given a monthly income that can be used to purchase energy saving devices to thus offset their emissions and increase their happiness simultaneously.

Players work to balance carbon neutral emissions produced by their characters in the house with household harmony and happiness.

UM uses a map-portrayal service as means for representing location-based information and complements it with a set of tools for users to process, share and organize this information. The software and related web-based services, enable users (e.g. citizens and city administration) to obtain and share information about a city / neighborhood or any other place represented in the map. Urban Mediator can also connect to other systems such as city customer services or community portals.

Urban Mediator interface is available for both PC and Mobile browsers. The interface is currently localized into English, Spanish, Catalan, Dutch and Russian.

Urban Mediator has been developed by the ARKI group at Media Lab, through the EU-funded ICING project (2006-2008). Its development was done iteratively, following a co-design approach involving various stakeholders in Helsinki, and later in the two other ICING cities, Barcelona and Dublin. The Urban Mediators set up for the three cities are currently in use by city administrations, communities, and individuals.

Helsinki Skaala Opera’s Turing Machine opera, composed by Eeppi Ursin and Visa-Pekka Mertanen, is comprised mainly of new electronic music and realtime sampling of old and new material. The libretto is based on the play “Turing” by Miko Jaakkola, which tells the strange life story of this exceptionally talented and complex person. The 3D visualization and digital scenography is by Merja Nieminen and the Crucible Studio team as part of the Salero project.

Alan Turing (1912-1954) was a British mathematician who made history. His breaking of the German U-boat Enigma cipher in World War II ensured Allied-American control of the Atlantic. But Turing’s vision went far beyond the desperate wartime struggle. Already in the 1930s he had defined the concept of the universal machine, which underpins the computer revolution. In 1945 he was a pioneer of electronic computer design. But Turing’s true goal was the scientific understanding of the mind, brought out in the drama and wit of the famous “Turing test” for machine intelligence and in his prophecy for the twenty-first century.

Drawn in to the cockpit of world events and the forefront of technological innovation, Alan Turing was also an innocent and unpretentious gay man trying to live in a society that criminalized him. In 1952 he revealed his homosexuality and was forced to participate in a humiliating treatment program, and was ever after regarded as a security risk. His suicide in 1954 remains one of the many enigmas in an astonishing life story.

In connection with Helsinki Skaala Opera’s multimedia opera Turing Machine (premiered in Helsinki May 2008), Crucible Studio created Turing Enigma. It is an on-line chatting experience, which continues the thematics of the Turing Machine opera and provides new points of view to the fascinating life of Alan Turing (1912-1954).

Turing, a heroic wartime code-breaker and pioneer of computer science, made a provocative contribution to the debate regarding artificial intelligence: whether it will ever be possible to say that a machine is conscious and can think. As a person he was “an ordinary English homosexual atheist mathematician”, which led him, tragically, to commit suicide by cyanide poisoning.

In Turing Enigma, Alan Turing’s spirit has infiltrated the German WWII encrypting device Enigma, the “unbreakable” code of which Turing successfully cracked. The user can play the role of the cryptologist and engage in discussions in English with Alan Turing’s spirit on the web site. The artificial character can recognize words and sentences from text typed-in by users and then reply accordingly with text and by “spitting out” various 3D-animated objects and sounds out of the Enigma machine.

Turing Enigma is on-line at:
http://www.taik.fi/turingenigma

Crucible Studio is a research group of the Media Lab of the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Turing Enigma is done as part of the Salero EU-project (http://www.salero.info).
