Our research activities are considerable within the context of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture (ARTS) in Aalto University and our external research funding level currently exceeds all other schools and units in Aalto ARTS. Research in the Media Lab includes basic research and a significant amount of externally funded research and development in which the broad base of knowledge, as well as the advanced artistic and design skills of the Lab’s community is applied. The Lab attempts to build active and effective links between its research and its masters programmes.
Research and development is undertaken in national and international partnerships, in which the Media Lab’s role, methods and output can be understood as a working strategy for innovation as well as the critical development of research per se within a new and complex field. The Lab’s research groups give birth to software products, services, experimental audiovisual productions, events and more. In fiscal terms, the volume of research currently ranges between 500.000€ to 1 000.000€ annually.
Our doctorate program allows individuals to study and do research towards the degree of Doctor of Art (in Art and Design), as offered by our school. More information on the doctoral studies.
Papers and reports by our researchers, as well as doctoral dissertations are available through the Publications page.
