CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT for INTERACTIVE AND VIRTUAL MULTIMEDIA

- background information -

The "European Concept Development for Interactive and Virtual Multimedia" is a learning project, aimed at European broadcasters and audio-visual production companies. With this course the Media Academie in partnership with the BBC Training and the Medialab UIAH in Finland, will give experienced program makers in Radio and Television the opportunity of changing their linear way of thinking and producing into an innovative, non-linear way.

The European Concept Development for Interactive and Virtual Multimedia III-project follows on former courses, which the Media Academie successful gave in 1996/97 and 1999. Experienced program makers participated in this course, learning about and experimenting with applications of interactive and virtual technologies.

The project is a modular training course in multimedia concept development and interactive program making. The course consists of five modules. Learning at a distance will play a major role during the project.

TEAM RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION
Teams, consisting of four members to a team will be able to participate in the project. Broadcasting organisations and audio-visual production companies within Europe can each provide a program team or individual participants. A team will include a director/producer, a writer, a graphic designer, webmaster, programmer or other people who will have to work in the future on cross media programs. Also individuals with experience in the above mentioned professions can apply.

MENTOR
Each program team will be assigned a (national or international) mentor, experienced in the field of multimedia development. The mentor's task is to support the team during the development of the final product. The mentors will be recruited from the various European countries and will supervise teams in their own language.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
This project is aimed at the first section of the non-linear production process: concept development through to the specification and production of a prototype. The first module deals with the entire non-linear production process. To enable teams that have developed a concept during the course to start production immediately, production will be initiated during the last module.

The duration of the course is 6 months from March to November 2000 and consists of 3 two-month phases. Each phase starts with a learning module. After the introduction, subsequent lessons will deal in depth with the issues discussed during the introduction.

"European Concept Development for Interactive and Virtual Multimedia" 1999

The Media Lab UIAH has the pleasure of hosting a course for European broadcast media professionals during the period Mon 22.3. - Fri 26.3.1999. The Finnish portion of the course has been planned and coordinated by the Media Lab UIAH in collaboration with the Hilversum Media Academy, Holland (main project coordinator) and the BBC Training Centre, London. The project is supported by the EU's Media2 programme.

The total course consists of six modules, 32 days in total. With this course the partners will provide programme makers the opportunity of developing their working methods from traditional linear productions and procedures towards non-linear productions by utilising new techniques including, for example, the Internet, Streaming Media and Virtual Reality. The courses involve teams from European Broadcasting organisations and audiovisual production companies.

Distance learning will play a major role during the course as participants communicate and work together through the Internet. The aim of the course is to combine interactive content development, conventional television making and new technology within a collaborative European development process.

Each of the nine participant teams include a director/producer, a writer, a graphic designer and an interaction designer/programmer, all with practical experience as working professionals in the field. Each program team has a national or international mentor, experienced in the field of multimedia development.
