'aware' is a flexible platform that operates a spatio-temporal moblog (mobile log) allowing collective contribution and distribution of media. The project has focused upon how to communicate context-awareness, mobile experience, and its narrative potential. In relation to the eculture fair, 'aware' invites a sharing of subject and experience, relating the context of event (and the things of interest found within) to personal experience and memory by partaking in a collective awareness of lived experience outside the fair. Using the 'aware' platform, media can be captured and contributed from any location inside or outside the event using mobile devices, and linked to an associated project at the fair.
Simply put, the plan is to set up a server and 'moblog' for the duration of the event allowing people to send to it mobile media, such as pictures, SMS and voice messages.
'aware' has been developed since February 2003 collaboratively in the MediaLab by Aki-Ville Pöykiö, John Evans (both MA students) , Andrew Paterson (Doctorate student) and Markus Ort (our recent exchange student to the Medialab from KISD, Köln). Heli Rantavuo (Doctorate student) will join the 'aware' group for the e-culture proposal, to study the visitors interaction with the moblog during the event.
This would be the first opportunity to present the 'aware' platform outside of Finland, and give a rare opportunity to test and experiment with a large volume of usage by everyday people, over a short period of time.
