WATCH IT! - a workshop to train visual awareness "Images are everywhere, inside and around us, and in the last 25 years, their multiplication on paper and on screen has been tremendous. Whether we realize it or not, visual messages inform and form us at the same time. Without asking for permission, millions of computer-retouched icons influence us, unconsciously and shape our dreams, our identity. From cave drawings to Church yesterday and for Business today, images have been an important tool. Images are also fundamental in thought processes. But at the turn of the 21st century, we still do not learn ways to approach and "read" visual messages as an integral part of our general training. So how about putting the kaleidoscope of our views and questions together, in order to develop visual "Sherlock Holming" skills?" (Eva Saro) WATCH IT! is a visual awareness workshop targeting both professionals working with images and the general public. The idea of the workshop is to train visual awareness through a series of practices aimed at developing image-reading basics, for example through a creative manipulation of images. WATCH IT! is building on a series of image-questioning workshops, organized since 1994 by visual artist Eva Saro, in cooperation with museums, schools and companies in Europe and Brazil. The themes for WATCH IT! in Nykyaika are Portraits, identity-building and values. The focus will be on images of men, women, children; couples, families, groupsÉ While portraits are easily related to and form a majority of media images around us, questioning their relation to our identity-building is essential. One aim of the WATCH IT! workshops is to engage in questioning the values embedded in these representations. WATCH IT! is also a pilot project towards a web-based imaging workshop. The website http://mlab.uiah.fi/watchit incorporates a first set of digital visual practices developed by Eva Saro in collaboration with art & design students in Helsinki. The website, designed by UIAH Media Lab, contains an image bank of portraits and commentaries, demos of image-reading practices and a record of the workshop results: images transformed by the participants. WATCH IT! - kuvalukutaidon workshop Taiteilija Eva Saro (Geneve) ja Taideteollisen korkeakoulun Medialaboratorio esittelevät web-workshopin kuvallisesta ajattelusta. Tervetuloa osallistumaan työskentelyyn Lasipalatsin Nykyaika-näyttämöllä! WATCH IT! -workshop harjoittaa kuvallista ajattelua ja kehittää visuaalista lukutaitoa keskustelujen, harjoitusten ja kuvamanipulaation kautta. Helsingissä järjestettävä WATCH IT! perustuu sarjaan työpajoja, joita taiteilija Eva Saro on toteuttanut Euroopassa ja Brasiliassa yhteistyössä museoiden, koulujen ja yritysten kanssa. Helsingin WATCH IT! on myös pilottihanke kuvalukutaitoa käsittelevän verkkopalvelun luomiseksi. TaiK Medialaboratorion toteuttama web-sivusto http://mlab.uiah.fi/watchit sisältää ensimmäiset digitaaliset versiot WATCH IT! -harjoituksista, kuvatietokannan sekä workshopin tuloksena syntyneitä kuvamuunnoksia kommentteineen. Lasipalatsin WATCH IT! -workshopin ja web-sivuston teemana ovat muotokuvat. Tarkastelun kohteena ovat kuvat miehistä, naisista ja lapsista; pareista, perheistä ja ryhmistä. Lähtökohtana on ajatus, että ihmiskäsityksemme lisäksi myös minäkuvamme rakentuu median tarjoamien muotokuvien välityksellä. On siis tärkeää pysäyttää kuvavirta ja pohtia minkälaisia arvoja kuviin kätkeytyy. WATCH IT! -työpajan Lasipalatsin Nykyaika-näyttämöllä ja WATCH IT!-verkkosivuston ovat yhteistyössä toteuttaneet Eva Saro ja TaiK Medialaboratorio/ Minna Tarkka.
