The Suurpelto area in the City of Espoo in Finland is the most outstanding development project in the capital area today. Suurpelto is situated excellently regarding traffic communication. The beautiful nature and culturally historical landscape comprising the medieval village hills are setting perfect groundings for the development of Suurpelto. Development scheme is further supported by Espoo simultaneously profiling for also environmental conscious living and high technology business.
Suurpelto will be a pleasurable and distinctive pilot for an IT age garden city. In Suurpelto there will be two focal points differing spatially and functionally. The other area will comprise the central Promenade that connects and integrates office working and research activities, services and education, housing and leisure activities. The Promenade has an urban quality with architectural diversity and functional versality making it to the lively heart of the area. A multifunctional forum, the Origo, is located in the core of the urban centre.
The other main focus is on the park area. Comprising of over 30 hectares of meticulously detailed landscape this area will be suited to various leisure activities adjoining to Espoo’s existing vast park network. The parkland will be fringed by nature conscious housing groups in diverse architectural and housing type combinations and private gardens. Suurpelto’s spatial organisation and traffic network are created to suit and support mobile technologies. The realization of Suurpelto will be carried out through public and private partnership.
Suurpelto housing types are aimed to offer a garden city environment to different residents of all age groups and cultural backgrounds. The focus is also to strengthen communitisation by integrating housing with working, education and high quality leisure time.
Suurpelto housing is mostly a combination of private or combined houses and row houses with private yards. They are located right on the edge of the park area.
City villas are low small scale blocks of flats. Their lively architectural expressions will define a pleasant cityscape.
The apartment buildings are situated by the Promenade close to all the services. The ground and the uppermost levels have differing architectural features in order to create diversity to the urban architecture of the Promenade.
Serviced apartments (for disabled and elderly) are located by the curved edge of the Promenade in front of the office buildings.

Services – Mobile life
In Suurpelto physical and virtual services complement each other. Wireless mobile technology improves life quality in many ways. Suurpelto street network and other infrastructure are realized in line with the demands of mobile technology. The area will be covered by a wireless network with its support points. This will enable several services that require mobile applications. A typical example being a netcafé that the Promenade will offer a wireless internet connection for its clients. The other example might be a wireless support point located at the playgrounds offering access to service personnel, nannies and children. Adding to the services there will be an access point to communal services located maybe in the Origo.
Mobile technology makes living easier and more fluent. For example there can be a cooled storage by the apartments for the netshop to deliver groceries by order. The mail and laundry services can also be utilised by this delivery service. Shopping can be done in an easier way and also without driving.
Most of the physical services in Suurpelto are located by the Promenade.
The Core of Suurpelto – THE ORIGO
The Origo is the identifier and the symbol of Suurpelto. The building is located centrally across the new highway Kehä II entry and it forms the focal end point to the park area stretching to the Promenade. The Origo has a bravely genuine and memorable architectural identity.
The Origo is an abstract of the new city concept. It is a common meeting point to the residents, workers, students and visitors. It intermediates between all the functions and both the private and public sectors. The Origo offers spaces related to work, studies, culture and leisure, as well as commercial activities. For example a library - mediatheque, an auditorium, meeting and concert halls, galleries, fitness clubs, restaurants and shops are to be visited in the Origo.
The Origo is also the portal connecting physical and visual IT networks.
Leisure time – Creative state of mind
Suurpelto will offer an exceptionally broad range of outdoor leisure activities, sports, hobbies and enjoying park like natural environments. The whole area will have a garden city feel. The connections to Espoo Green Belts will enable extensive outdoor adventures.
Urban cultural activities are gathered by the Promenade. The street cafes and squares stimulate casual meetings and deepen social communication. The Origo act as the open public forum and the centre of cultural happenings.

The business quarters of Suurpelto are located between the curved Promenade and a main highway, Kehä II. They comprise of modifiable and rational office blocks that are connected by internal walkways. The main blocks contain only actual office spaces. The supporting functions, such as restaurants, canteens, cafes and health and fitness services, are located on the ground floor by the Promenade. These serviced are thus accessed by all the employees, residents, students and occasional visitors.
By the side of private enterprises the business quarters also include university, research and science activities. The aim is to achieve interactive relations between private and public sectors and to cater for life long learning. Public sector activities are mainly situated to the south from the new Kehä II highway exit.
In addition to modern and efficient office spaces the area will offer flexibility to working hours and locations. The urban density and overlapping functions of Suurpelto will enable fluent time management between work and home. Part time telecommuting from home, the library or the café can be a more profitable and pleasant way of working. Suurpelto working environment is multilayered and colourful, a real urban environment, that does not isolate employees within their enterprises.
