Raymond Steele: The Evolution of Personal Communications
"The term personal communications is not well defined, as are the related terms personal communications networks (PCN) and personal communications systems (PCS). PCN and PCS appear to synonymous, with the Europeans preferring the former and the Americans the latter nomenclature. However, usage of PCN/PCS varies widely. To some it is public communications where the communicator is personally owned, while others would argue that PCN does not yet exist, and the first one will be the global mobile network planned for beginning of the next century.
We are concerned here with examining how we might evolve from the current chaotic scene in mobile radio communications to the global network known in Europe as the universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS), and by the ITU as the future public land mobile telecommunications system (FPLMTS). A pre-requisite for our discussion is a brief statement of the current scene followed by list of the cardinal goals of UMTS. From this framework we may speculate on evolutionary routes."

"Multimedia Mobile Communication Study Committee" chaired by Prof.
Tadao SAITO, Faculty of Engineering, Tokyo University, in August 1994
to carry out research on mobile communications systems in the
multimedia age."
Telecoms Research Group:Mobile Audio-Visual Terminal
"This project (RACE R2072) is concerned with the design of a Mobile Audio-Visual Terminal (MAVT) using the Digital European Cordless Telephone (DECT) radio interface standard and with the evolution of the MAVT towards the new radio interface standards such as Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) and Mobile Broadband System (MBS)."
"The problem of office and house wiring is well known: just moving some equipment is nearly impossible. Such an operation cost time and brings huge costs along with it. To overcome such problems, much research is going on which should lead to a wireless office. Communications between equipment is then wireless and so easy relocatable. The Circuits and Systems group has been working towards the realization of such a system since 1991. Under the name WISSCE (Wireless Indoor Spread Spectrum Communication Equipment) the group is working on a non-cellular system providing ad-hoc communication links."

"PCS has been referred to as a concept that will provide users with the ability to communicate with anyone, anywhere, and anytime. It describes services and supporting systems which have wireless, wireline, and networking capabilities. The above definition encompasses the concepts of terminal mobility, personal mobility, and service mobility."
Michael L. Johnson and Lee F. Tamassia: Wireless PCS Auctions
"The following is an overview of the Federal Communication Commision's ongoing auction of the Electromagnetic Spectrum for the purpose of developing Personal Communication Systems (PCS)."
Peter Cho and Jennings Cole: Wireless Data Personal Communication
"These days the computer users want their computers to be networked as evidenced by the tremendous growth in network software and hardware over the past several years. The users also want their computers to be portable. Wanting portable networks gives to the term wireless data personal communication. There is a growing opportunity in this area, and currently faxes, emails, and even short messages are being sent to anyone with an access to the network in most of the cities in the United States. There is a company named RadioMail Corporation which this which provides this network service to many users. However, there are other providers of this service."

Robert S. Swain: UMTS - A 21st Century System
"The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System is the realisation of a new generation of mobile communications technology for a world in which "personal services will be based on a combination of fixed and wireless /mobile services to form a seamless end-to-end service for the user"
Universal Mobile Telecommunication System UMTS
"The ACTS Programme (Advanced Communications Technologies and Services) represents the European Commission's major effort to support precompetitive RTD (Research and Technological Development) in the context of trials in the field of telecommunications during the period of the Fourth Framework Programme of scientific research and development (1994-1998)."

Proposal for the Finnish National Host (UTMS)
"Research into advanced mobile communication in the IBC and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) frameworks is one of the major activities in ACTS. The Finnish National Host proposes to support these efforts by providing a specialised National Host for testing mobile systems and applications in an evolutionary environment starting from the present GSM and ATM based networks and aiming to offer UMTS and broadband specific properties."

Lloyd Wood: INTEGRATION OF UMTS AND B-ISDN
"In the future, existing fixed networks will be complemented by mobile networks with similar numbers of users. These mobile users will have identical requirements and expectations to the fixed users, for on-demand applications of telecommunications requiring high bit-rate channels. It will be necessary for these fixed and mobile networks to interoperate in order to pass data, in real time and at high speeds, between their users.
But how far must this interoperation be taken? How much
integration of the fixed and mobile network structures is needed?
Here, a fixed network, B-ISDN, and a mobile network, UMTS, under
development at the same time, are examined to see how well and
closely they should work together in order to meet expected user
needs. Work already taking place on this is discussed."
