Mulli abode is situated some 10 kilometers west of Turku, in Ihala, Raisio. The abode was found in 1986 when Tuula Pitkänen made an inventory and some Iron-Age ceramics were discovered. Turku University then began excavations in the area in the summer of 1994 in cooperation with Raisio City & under the leadership of B. A. Taina Pietikäinen. The excavations were finished in 1997. Some very well preserved wood-lines were found, and with the aid of radiocarbon method they have been dated back to ca. 980-1220 A.D. The abode was excavated in a unit excavation, i.e., every separate wood construction and blotch of earth were numbered already in the field. The white scraps seen in the picture are unit numbers. Each and every construction and blotch of earth were drawn on a map, photographed, and the coordinates were written down on a form. The finds discovered in a unit were collected, and the unit number was written on the bag. Then the height of a unit from the sea level was measured with a levelling instrument. All this information is necessary for scholars when later investigating the finds and the mutual relations of the constructions.
