Ephemeron

distributed personalities; dynamic communities; structures, principals and functions; scientific visualization, ambience.

To my opinion the shift from industrial to information society essentially affected perception of the human personality. My monument would represent the community of extended, distributed and dynamic human individuals of information age.

Entities do not exist anymore – everything is a matter of scale: on one hand, substances, elements, processes can be split to infinity, on the other, they could be understood as parts of bigger conglomerates: creating new meanings and producing different existences.

Talking about human individuals, it is difficult to distinguish the borders of personality: a person is not anymore identified with a class, activity, profession – rather with synthesized skills and preferences, which can vary in time and are highly dependant on the context. Most often they are useless if not communicated or integrated into the system of many.

In terms of labor economy, an individual is considered as a specific set of skills, which functions only in cooperation and interaction with other individuals performing various other roles. Commitment to a common purpose and possession of complementary skills make a productive whole possible. As the tasks to be accomplished get more complex, the division of work and shared responsibility is often the only solution.

At the technical level of human activity, the example of solution of complexity could be Computing Community, which is a single, dynamically changing, virtual multiprocessor system, physically built of many components, engaged into reaching common goal.

Constructivist approach in education is for example manifested in Collaborative Learning Environment, where the knowledge is actively constructed by the team members and emerges in time.

In terms of productive community, the structures, principles, functions and hierarchies are more important, than every single member of community. The human being as constant is transformed to variable – the system is able to function if one member is removed and substituted with other.

That’s why I think, the monument, which would represent the aesthetics of information age would be a visualization of human activities in the community using method of scientific visualization, which would represent the relationships, structures and changes in time of community members, their roles and activities. The result would be a visual pattern of all activities in a particular community evolving in time and space, with the possibility to zoom, trace back, explore particular branch, etc. It would have purely aesthetic value of creating the ambience and also possibly be functional as a tool providing information about the activities in the community.
(As I doubt that I would be able to produce a real tool for visualization, my final proposal for a monument would be an animation, mocking up an action in the community, hopefully with the possibility for the user to interact (be represented and affect the common visual ambience. The user for example could choose some of personality profiles and type in keywords to see how it affects the whole).
