FIRING OF VIKING AGE CERAMICS

The kiln is first covered with a supporting wooden structure. The thick boughs have been covered with clay from underneath. The clay layer will burn into ceramics in the process and it will keep the fire from getting into the wood itself.
It is essential that the cover stays on during the whole of the burning process. Should there be large holes in the cover, there would also be a flow of fresh air into the oven, which in turn results both in an uncontrollable firing, loss of temperature and the colouring of vessels to light brown in stead of the intended black.
