InsideOut
- Constructing Character as a Space for Action
InsideOut
- Constructing Character as a Space for Action
During the
fall 2000, the InsideOut character-centred design paradigm and production
were designed in the study project "Drama
Between Real and Virtual", tutored by Mika
Tuomola. The participant team consisted of Ville Eerikäinen,
Sami Haartemo, Sami Haikonen, Hanna Harris, Katri Palomäki, Riikka
Pelo, Egon Randlepp, and Simona Schimanovich who are all MA major students
at Medialab of Helsinki University
of Art and Design.
September-December
2000, the study project took a critical look into the nature and the
representation of virtual communities in the context of real world social
structures, as they appear in various cultures, while attempting to
develop a new dramatic form interlinking the real and the virtual, and
thus revealing the currently hidden value structures of globally networked
media. The project recognised Character, its viewpoint and representation
as a central dramatic construct for these purposes, and created a design
approach for a constructed web character believed to be true by observers,
while also presenting her as an inhabitable virtual space, an avatar
world.
The implementation
of the approach took place during January-May 2001 resulting in the
production "Candira".
The production ran from May 7-11, and was updated daily. The web site
remains up for the discussion board activity in Candira's "Mirror."
Candira was a first year MA student research production on dramatic
web structures and visualisation, participatory digital narrative, and
new character-centred genres between fiction and documentary, short
story and homepage, text and moving image. The production team were
Ville Eerikäinen, Sami Haartemo, Sami Haikonen, Hanna Harris, Egon
Randlepp, Simona Schimanovich, and Felicitas Tritschler.
