CRUCIFIX (Raision srk. s.n.)
Type: Wooden crucifix.
Use: Christian artefact.
Site: Raisio church.
Period: Early Middle Ages.
Dating: 1320-1330 A.D.
This big crucifix, a so-called triumphal crucifix, separates the church hall from the choir where the altar resides and where only the priest is permitted to enter. This crucifix from Lieto is supposed to date back to the 1320s or 1330s. It is made by the so-called Master of Lieto. He was either a Gottlandish sculptor or a Finnish sculptor who received influence from the Gottlandish Gothic. No literary documents concerning him have been preserved but his oeuvre is identifiable by its style. Of the sculptures in Raisio church, also Virgin Mary and St. Martin are made by him.
