PENNANNULAR BROOCH (TYA 283: 12)

Type: A pennannular brooch, manufactured of a twisted bronze bar.

Use: Jewel, clip for clothing.

Site: Raisio, Ihala, Siiri cremation cemetery.

Period: Viking Age.

Dating: 980-1220 A.D.

Size: Proportions 36 mm and 25 mm.

Photographer: Arto Korhonen.

The so-called pennannular brooches were common clips for men's robes. For this roll-headed, twisted brooch, no exact equivalents are known so far. Brooches that are either roll-headed or twisted are known not only in Finland but also in Gottland; this brooch of Siiri, however, is probably the only known one in which these two features are combined.
