In concert with our ethnographic investigations of technologies-in-use we’ve been engaged in research aimed at contributing to practice-based approaches to the design of digital technologies. This is an image I developed to explain this phase of our research agenda to my colleagues at PARC. One of our goals has been to emphasize the importance not just of designing any single information artifact, but of attending to the requirements of integration both across technologies and between the technologies and the activities in which they’re used.
