Performing new media: translations and resistances at the interface

Abstract

My paper will look at how "new media" is perfomed in discourses of policy, usability, cultural production and design. Focusing on two processes at work in the design of information technology - translation and resistance - I will probe the way towards a cultural analysis of interfaces and an understanding of the actor-networks in new media. The discussion concludes with questions of the designer's position: if there are several 'versions' of new media, which are the ones that are performed in current new media design?
