Rhythmic Interactions - Schema-SID / RUIS Project The emotional and experiential value of sound suggests an opportunity for establishing a deep relationship between people and interactive systems. The fundamental capabilities of human na- ture, such as equilibrium, effort, and pace provide a good ground to build upon. These individual capabilities are also the basis of flamenco, enhanced by the rhythmic interplay between the per- formers for negotiating the tempo, communicating the structure, and sharing or passing over the initiative. We are interested in transferring these individual and social capabilities to a stripped- down interactive software system via the rich possibilities of rhythmic interaction. Aalto University Laptop Orchestra, AULO Aalto University Laptop Orchestra, AULO, aims to bring together all kinds of interests for sharing experimental/electronic music experience in live performances. AULO is an open group for experimenting collaborative laptop music both in academic and free context. Experimenting with Human Musical Interaction The interdisciplinary characteristic of computer music, new media and research based on the live-practice of art resulted in increased awareness of the artistic possibilities in this research process. Research resulted in doctoral dissertation presenting new information on interdisciplinary collaboration in the form of strategies developed for creating interactive performance systems, the observations of their performance features, conclusions and conceptual theories. EMI Project EMI project gives a possibility to non-professional musicians to experience a musical activity where the pleasure is achieved by being able to play around with the reliable instrument, exploring and experimenting on different sound structures. The work done at EMI constructs on existing academic references like Verplank’s paper on the creation of microcontroller-based instruments, but also in the inspirational work by and about John Cage and other electronic musicians. SolarDuo Project SolarDuo Project experiments with the possible sound structures that light waves can create in analog and in digital environments. Project utilizes analog sounds together with the algorithms. Analog sounds and computer-generated sounds release an unexpected richness of the sound processing in real-time performances. SolarDuo Project’s algorithmic strategies and musical work done in this project rely on the improvisation process, which frames a ground to a way of perform- ing that gives unexpected results. SolarDuo Project explores a changing set of sonic relationships overtime. |
