GLASS BEADS (TYA 283: 13)

Type: Beads made of melted glass.

Use: Jewel.

Site: Raisio, Ihala, Siiri cremation cemetery I.

Period: Viking Age

Dating: 800-1025 A.D.

Size: Diameter 48-67 mm

Photographer: Arto Korhonen.

In this photograph there are a lot of Viking period beads. Originally they did not belong to the same necklace. Many of them are possibly of eastern origin. For example, the big yellow beads with colourful "eyes" were probably made in present-day Turkestan, in Central Asia. Similar beads were manufactured in other colours as well. The white, "cylinder-shaped" beads have been cut of carnelian, a semi-precious stone. These were possibly made in India, Iran, or in the Caucasus. Beads like these may have been imported into Northern Europe via the trade-routes of the great rivers of Russia.
