CAREER HISTORY

EMPLOYER: Media Lab University of Art and Design Helsinki
Position: user interface designer, researcher
Period: April 2001 - June 2004

Main tasks:

  • conceptual and user interface design for a web-based collaborative learning system Fle3 (http://fle3.uiah.fi) in ITCOLE (Innovative Technologies for Collaborative Learning) EU-IST project.
  • conceptual and user interface design for several websites supporting user community
  • collecting and understanding user requirements, doing conceptual design, making visual and functional (interactive) prototyping, writing specifications for user interface implementation and carrying out the user interface development and integration till the final stage
  • writing texts and producing graphic design for sumplementing publications, such as user manuals, report brochures, etc.

  • Fle3 learning environment ( http://fle3.uiah.fi)

    Fle3 is a web-based learning environment. To be more specific Fle3 is a server software for computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL). Fle3 is Open Source and Free Software released under the GNU General Public Licence (GPL). Fle3 is designed to support learner and group centered work that concentrates on creating and developing expressions of knowledge (i.e. knowledge artefacts) and design.

  • Synergeia learning environment ( http://bscl.fit.fraunhofer.de/)

    Synergeia is a software system developed within the ITCOLE research project funded by the European Union in 2001-2003. It is designed to support collaborative knowledge building in classrooms of schools. The Synergeia system combines an asynchronous component named BSCL, which extends the BSCW system, and an asynchronous component named MapTool, which is part of the ANTS system.

  • www.euro-cscl.org

    The www.euro-cscl.org web site serves as a community site and resource of information for practitioners (teachers), researchers and school administrators in Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) field. The www.euro-cscl.org website has been initiated by ITCOLE (Innovative Technologies for Collaborative Learning and Knowledge Building) project.

  • 'Sound of our Water' project ( http://unesco.uiah.fi/water)

    The Sound of Our Water web site is part of UNESCO's Young Digital Creators programme. The purpose of the web site is to provide young people an online platform to reflect on water issues. Young people are invited to compose soundscapes and music pieces about water with a collection of sound samples using digital tools. The web site is a meeting point for sharing experiences and exchanging ideas among the participants.

Position: teacher/tutor in the UNESCO YDC Sound of Our Water project
Period: April 2004 - July 2004

Main tasks:

  • planning the project activities, creating the lesson plan
  • teacher training, supervising and guiding a multinational group of project participants to fulfill the project objectives. Contacts with project participants via email and the Sound of Our Water website.

  • Creating the syllabus of the course, collecting reading materials, planning the course schedule.
  • Teaching, guiding and supervising the group of students through the WebCT virtual learning platform, supervising the essay work, reading and evaluating the essays, evaluating the student work in general.

STUDY PROJECTS:

  • Immediate Impressions
    The 'Immediate Impressions' project was an experimental attempt to collect people's impressions and comments about the conference sessions during The Good, The Bad and The Irrelevant conference, September 3-5 2003, University of Art and Design Helsinki. We designed and developed a software tool that enabled people to collaboratively comment on the conference sessions using a web camera.
  • Celebrate.uiah.fi
    'Celebrate.uiah.fi' project is an online collection of people's (Finns and people currently living in Finland) stories, drawings and photos describing celebrations of the most important festivals for their families. The initial version of the project will be realized through workshops in Caisa International Cultural Centre and Kontupiste where the stories will be made and uploaded to the web by participants and online 'Celebrate.uiah.fi' portal open for anyone to participate throughout the year 2004.
