FLARToolkit tutorial

1. Introduction

1.1 What is AR?

“Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality. By contrast, virtual reality replaces the real world with a simulated one.”

SoundManager

From the SoundManager website:

“Using HTML5 and Flash, SoundManager 2 provides reliable cross-platform audio under a single JavaScript API. (…)

SoundManager 2 gives you a simple but powerful API that supports both new and old, using HTML5 audio where supported and an invisible Flash fallback where needed. Ideally when using SoundManager 2, audio ‘just works’.”

Unity and Flash

Unity will soon be able to publish to Flash. This will allow for powerful 3D web applications, integrating physics and advanced 3D techniques.
“This means that next to the already existing build targets of a Unity project, one will be able to target Flash with Stage3D, announced for Flash Player 11.”

Adobe releases preview of Edge, new HTML5 Web motion and interaction design tool

Yesterday, Adobe released a preview of Edge, “a new web motion and interaction design tool that allows designers to bring animated content to websites, using web standards like HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3.” The preview is free, for the time being.

This seems to be another step in Adobe’s attempt to diversify from Flash, after the release of a prototype Flash to HTML5 converter.

Microsoft’s Kinect controller hacked

Via BBC News:

Microsoft’s Kinect controller has been hacked only a few days after it officially went on sale. Code to control the motion-capture device has been produced that allows it to be used with a PC rather than the Xbox game console. Those behind the hack are keen to use the device in schools, art projects and to aid human-robot interaction.

This opens many possibilities for using Kinect’s advanced motion capture for exploratory / artistic projects.

The hack follows a competition launched by Adafruit.

About Kinect, from Wikipedia:

Kinect for Xbox 360, or simply Kinect (originally known by the code name Project Natal), is a “controller-free gaming and entertainment experience” by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game platform. (…)
Kinect is based on software technology developed internally by Microsoft and range camera technology by Israeli developer PrimeSense, which interprets 3D scene information from a continuously-projected infrared pattern.

Adobe demos Flash to HTML5 converter

Adobe has recently demoed a tool to convert a Flash file to HTML5.

Quoting Mashable:

(Flash) animations or interactions will now be viewable on all kinds of devices — including the iPhone and iPad. This is where we think that this HTML5 conversion tool has real possibilities. It’s one thing to be able to convert a movie or animation — that’s impressive — it’s the resources within those Flash files, however, that are potentially more useful.
