March 2008, New Delhi @ Going to School
This was a client project for Going to School(GTS) , an NGO based in New Delhi, India who arecurrently working on a project called “Be an Entrepreneur” where they collect stories and conduct workshops for the kids in the economically under-privileged areas of the neighborhood initiating entrepreneurial traits and helping them to create sustainable systems within their communities to support themselves by identifying opportunities and creating livelihoods.
I was asked by GTS to make interactive boxes for kids that illustrated certain entrepreneurial traits that the facilitators could use to start a dialogue in the workshops.
During this one month project, I worked on creating 3 boxes that represented 3 entrepreneurial traits - Curiosity, Insightful and Innovative.
These objects were non-digital yet engaging for the kids, most of whom did not even go to school. These boxes brought out the essence of each of these traits when the kids interacted and explored the contents of the box. It was important that these were non-digital, playful objects that were very approachable. Hence, I used only found materials like matchboxes, mouse balls, string, cycle spokes etc and also deliberately gave it a raw/unfinished look so the kids would not feel intimidated but rather feel free to explore and play around with them.
Each box was accompanied by a visual clue/instruction to how to use the object in the each box.
This was an extremely fun project. And I was happy to see that the kids really enjoyed playing with them.
