SQ.FT (SQUARE FEET)

Sept 2003, Bangalore @ Srishti school of art, design and Technology

Overview

Sq. ft. was a film born out of the frustrations of finding an apartment in a city. You’re looking more than just a place to stay or a good view, you’re looking for a home. We started this project quite unusually. Before the script had completely emerged, and the characters fully sketched out, we stumbled on this bizarre set of apartments, in a quiet corner of the city. They were haunted, apparently no one had bought a single apartment, and with good reason. From the first day we were there, to the day of the last shoot, we had gotten lost several times, ending up in odd places. This became the inspiration for our script. This film was made with a fellow student, as a part of the film production course. We built the characters of the Real Estate agent and the young man, keeping the space in mind, and built a story that weaves around the space, and tries to re-create the reality of the experience of being there through these characters.

Overview

My room in yelehanka, Bangalore has inspired many of my works. It has almost been like a studio space that lends itself to many stories. There are many thought bubbles floating there; and in the dark they glow… This bit of animation is also set in my room. It’s a work in progress.

PURPLE

Yelahanka, Bangalore

Overview

Purple is a hyper-fiction which traces my journey through five years in srishti in the form of a collection of fictional anecdotes and ideas set in a fantasy space. Hyper fiction allows the readers to be co-narrators of the story and unravel the plots by finding their own paths through it, taking the level of engagement one step further. Its my story to tell and your story to read and both are equally valid and “true” so to speak. “the reader’s activity in any reading causes the text to diffuse to an infinite number of other (cultural) texts.”- Roland Barthes I wanted to bring this personal story into the public realm in a way that it is relatable to all. Purple, thus became a visual experience through a story where the viewer chooses his/her path through the events using visual aids within the frame rather than textual links. The main challenge in this project was to create serendipitous narrative experience for the viewer and still keep elements that weave together the story. I would like to take this forward by creating a space within the web site where viewers can add links to their own narratives. If all these narratives are interlinked within them it will probably become the densest hyper fiction cutting across many cultural and social realms.
